Lot 4563
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.52 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 327. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. VROVIEEN-TIVA CVESS / S - F/ NRLT Campgate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 301-2 (for possible prototype). Slightly rough, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This is a mule, with an obverse for Constantine I and a reverse for the Caesars. The style is clearly unofficial, with several errors in the reverse legend and mint mark, indicating a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation.
